Setting up a first iPhone for a child

Marcus Adeyemi · 2026-07-14 · 9 min read

A step-by-step checklist for the first hour with a new iPhone, from account setup to the boundaries worth agreeing on before day one.

Before you hand it over

Do the setup together rather than presenting a finished device. The configuration itself is a teaching moment, and children who watch the choices being made are far more likely to respect them.

Agree on what happens if a rule is broken before any rule is broken. Consequences decided in advance feel fair; consequences invented in the moment feel arbitrary.

The first-hour checklist

Create the child account correctly, review the app allow list together, choose the web-content categories, enable safe search, and set the first downtime window. Then add the device to your FamiSafe family so the first week of reports has a baseline.
